Crystal River Ranch

Carbondale, Colorado

For more than 25 years, Carpenter Studio has collaborated on the ongoing master planning and landscape design of this 10,000-acre working cattle and hay ranch. All improvements are guided by a permanent conservation easement that requires a careful balance between productive land use, long-term stewardship, and thoughtful siting.

The landscape framework supports daily ranch operations while allowing the property to evolve. A recently added residence was carefully integrated through road access, grading, and planting strategies that reinforce existing circulation patterns and minimize visual impact on the broader ranch landscape.

Past improvements across the property include entryways, a horse barn, equipment and storage facilities, a cook house, housing for ranch staff, and an owner’s residence. Together, these interventions form a cohesive working landscape that prioritizes function, durability, and continuity within the Roaring Fork Valley.
